People have contacted me saying they can't send me messages, make a friend request, or can't post on my wall because of my seeking preferences

Depended on what you selected in your search parameters, people that don't match your search parameter won't be able to send you messages unless you change that setting under Modify Search.

When you do a search and get your search results, you will see a tab called Modify Search, select that tab, at the bottom of the search parameter setting is a section called Privacy Options,

from there you can select if non-matches can
1- Send friend requests
2- Send Messages
3- Post on your wall
